Historian of Wine and the wine industry
Experience: Charlie Leary earned his undergraduate degree in history at Kenyon College, graduating magna cum laude with high honors and distinction. He won the Goldsmith Prize in history and the Gund Award in American Studies and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He then completed his MA and PhD in modern Chinese history at Cornell University. He received numerous grants and fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Mellon Foundation, the C. V. Starr Fellowships in East Asian Studies, and the Hu Shih Fellowship in Chinese Studies, including research at the Sorbonne, Academia Sinica, and the University of Lyons. He published in a peer reviewed academic journal and presented a paper at an academic conference. Charlie developed and taught the first course on modern Chinese history at Tulane University, rising from the level of Adjunct Instructor to Assistant Professor, and was also a Research Associate at the Newcomb College Center for Research on Woman.
After a career as a hospitality entrepreneur, Charlie has returned to history research and writing, focusing on wine. His numerous feature articles related to wine history have been published by Jane Anson's Inside Bordeaux and Tim Atkin, Master of Wine. He is currently writing a book on Bordeaux wine history from the 17th century to the present day.
